If you want to change your name on Twitter, you will have to follow some simple steps. This article will detail how to change your display name and username. These are two separate names that appear in different places on your profile page.

  1. Log in

The first thing you need to do is to sign into Twitter as you normally would with your username and password. You will be able to do the same using the Twitter app on your smartphone or tablet device.

  1. Go to Settings

Next you will need to navigate to Settings. Click the gear icon or your profile image. If you do not have a profile image, just choose Settings and then Privacy. The Account tab should already be open. If it is not, you can select Account in the main menu.

  1. Change Your Name

Simply type in the username you want to use in the provided field. It can be up to 15 characters long. If the username you have selected is already in use, you will see a message telling you this appear next to the box. You will have to choose a username that nobody else on Twitter has. It can contain alphanumerical characters and cannot contain the words “Admin” or “Twitter”. If you have a verified account, changing your username will result in losing your badge.

  1. Change Your Display Name

If you want to change your display name, you will need to follow these steps.

  • First log into Twitter like you normally would with your username and password.
  • Next go to your profile by clicking on your picture. You will find this in between the search bar and Tweet button.
  • Go to Edit Profile. This is a large button on the right side of the page.
  • Enter the display name you want to use for your Twitter profile. It can be up to 50 characters, and it will appear right below your profile picture. You can have the same display name as someone else, so it doesn’t have to be unique. You will also be able to use various emojis in your display name if you want.

If you have a verified account, changing your username or display name will cause you to lose the check mark that you have earned.
