Do you have to register Opal card?
Not all Opal cards need to be registered to travel, however there are benefits when you do. You can register Opal cards at any time online or through the Opal Travel app. Unregistered Adult and Child/Youth Opal cards are available at Opal retailers.

To use your phone as your Opal card you’ll need a bank or credit card provider that supports Google Pay, Apple Pay or Samsung Pay and a smartphone with NFC (near-field communication). You’ll then be able to tap on and off as you would with your Opal card.
Can I tap on with my Opal app?
If you have an American Express, Mastercard or Visa credit or debit card or a linked device, you can use it to pay for your travel by tapping on and tapping off at Opal readers. Just look for the contactless payment symbol . Contactless payments are available on all public transport in the Opal network.
Is it cheaper to use an Opal card?
Simply tap on and tap off with your mobile device to pay for public transport, similar to using a contactless-enabled phone or watch. All travel trips and payments can be viewed in the Opal digital card trial app.
Can two people use same Opal card?
Opal is cheaper. using the Opal card gives you a discount on the full fare. using a credit card means you are charged the full fare.
How much does it cost to get an Opal card?
Multiple use not permitted: You can only use an Opal Card for one trip at a time. You must not tap on twice with the same Opal Card in order to pay for another person’s trip.
What happens if you don’t tap off Opal?
There is no charge for an Opal card, however a minimum top up value of $20 for an adult card, or $10 for a child or concession card, applies at retailers or when using top up machines. Top up amounts of $10 for adult and $5 for child or concession are available when topping up online.

If you do not tap on, you may be fined for travelling without a valid ticket. If you tap on at the beginning and then forget to tap off at the end of your trip, you will be charged the default fare for an incomplete trip. Incomplete trips are not counted towards the Weekly Travel Reward on your Opal card.
