When it comes to playing, the Birman loves puzzle toys and games. It’s good to keep him occupied, but he’s not a high-maintenance cat, happy to get a head scratch here and a back scratch there. He may not need a lot of grooming, but because of his long coat, the Birman is especially prone to hairballs.

Birmans are usually kept as indoor cats and most are happy to be just that, a house cat, but some may enjoy going outside. If they’re allowed outside, make sure that the space is enclosed and safe for them to explore.

Birman cats are known as especially loving and affectionate breeds, having been bred as companion cats for many generations. They are docile and quietly spoken. Birman cats are sociable, smart and friendly cats, curious and people-oriented, but not too noisy.

Look of Birmans

Features a body that is golden or eggshell in color with darker points displayed on the face, legs and tail. Points come in such colors as seal, blue, chocolate and lilac. The eyes are round and always deep blue and the ears are small. The head is round.

The Birman fur is a single-length (no undercoat) soft, silky, and lush coat; they have a longer ruff around the neck and a fluffy tail. Their coats do not mat, and they require a minimum amount of grooming. The Birman is a hearty, healthy cat that does not reach full maturity until approximately 3 years of age.

The Birman is a cat breed with blue eyes that’s hard to resist. Their glossy blue eyes gives them a sweet appearance which will have you bending over backwards for them. Their common characteristics are gentle, affectionate and playful, making them ideal as family pets.

Males, or toms, can be friendlier than females. Female cats tend to be more reserved than males but are far less likely to spray. Females tend to howl when they go into heat and can become enceinte before their first year – talk to your vet about getting your female spayed.
