How to Keep Green Onions Fresh

Unlike regular onions, green onions – or spring onions, if you will – need to be stored properly due to their leafy green produce-like properties. They are widely loved in these cuisines for their scrumptious crunchy texture and subtle oniony flavor.
In addition to their culinary uses, green onions are also an excellent vitamin K, A, and C source which makes them great antioxidants and gives them anti-inflammatory properties.
However, they are highly susceptible to ethylene gas (more commonly known as ripening gas) which is why poorly stored scallions perish and turn soggy and discolored. To avoid having the vegetable gone bad, here’s a post on how to keep green onions fresh.
Some general storing tips for maintaining best quality:
- It must be made sure that the storage temperature is no higher than 32 to 36 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 to 2 degrees Celsius.
- Don’t store green onions near fruits with high ethylene production.
- Try storing them in humid environments. Adding too much moisture can also lead to the rotting of these leafy vegetables. So, maintaining the humidity is also an essential part when it comes to keeping green onions fresh.
With the above-mentioned tips in mind, here are some reliable methods you can adopt to keep green onions fresh for longer periods of time:
Freezing the Green Onions
For this method, you will need some paper towels and an airtight container or a jar. You can also use a zip lock bag for storage purposes.
- The first step is rinsing your green onions thoroughly with tap water.
- Then, pat dries the onions with some paper towels.
- After slicing off the roots and removing any discolored or bad parts, chop the onions.
- Now, some people prefer green parts only and discard off the bulbs. If you are one of them, then before finely chopping your produce, make sure to chop off the bulbs. On the contrary, if you want to save them, both the white bulbs and the green parts can be chopped and stored together. The latter is, in fact, more economical and budget-friendly. You can also store these two separately; it just depends upon your personal preferences.
- After chopping the onions, simply put them in an airtight container or a zip lock bag, with all the air removed, and stock them into your freezer.
- With this method, you’ll keep green onions fresh and ready to use in your favorite meals, at your ease, and whenever you like.
Refrigerating Your Produce
This method basically stores green onions like flowers but in a refrigerator.
- For this, you will need a jar (a regular mason jar or a recycled glass jar will do) and a plastic bag.
- Start off by placing your green onions in a jar with the bulbs at the bottom. Make sure that you have not prepped your produce. This is important because removing some of the wilted parts might expose the fresh layers underneath to going bad.
- Then, add some water to the jar. The water should be enough to cover the bulbs and roots but it should not cover any of the green parts.
- Then, take your shopping bag and put it on top of the green onions. Doing so will ensure that the onions are safe from the dry air of the refrigerator. All the moisture from the water in the jar is provided directly to the spring onions, maintaining a humid environment.
- Lastly, put them in the very back of your refrigerator, so that an optimal low temperature can be maintained.
- Remember to change the water in the jar every few days.
- Keep green onions fresh with this method for up to several weeks without any worries.
Lastly, Keep Them Fresh by Keeping Them Alive
Indeed, the best way to keep your green onions fresh is to keep them alive.
- One method to do so is to put your green onions in a jar with the root side down.
- Then, add two to three inches of water in the jar, enough to completely soak the roots in it. The water must be at room temperature or cooler.
- Then, place the jar in a well-lit, humid place; this can either be your kitchen counter or a windowsill.
- Make sure that the temperature is not too high for the scallions. Higher temperatures could lead to rotting.
- Carefully follow this method to keep your green onions fresh. It will not only keep the green onions from wilting but will also make them grow, increasing your produce supply for free.
Try any one of the methods we listed above and we’re sure you won’t have any problems when it comes to keeping your green onions fresh. All three methods are very different from each other but are equally effective. Let us know which one you picked and what your results were.
