1. Delete Duplicates in iTunes 12 or Later Version on Mac
  • Launch the iTunes application or program on your computer
  • After that, click on the “File” tab, then click on the “Library” and finally click on the “Show Duplicate Items”.
  • Next, click on the “All” option to find all duplicate tracklist and then click on “The same album to show” for the duplicated songs to show from their specific albums.
  • Press and hold on the Ctrl key and then click on the music columns to organize your songs into albums and artists to make the task effortless. When you organize your iTunes songs according to names, Artist, and Album by Artist, managing your music becomes pretty easy. Also, ensure that the Album and the artist both have a checkmark next to them.
  • After that, click on the “Name” column to ensure that duplicates appear next to each other. By doing that, iTunes will now display only copies.

  • Click on the “Library” tab located at the top of the menu.

  • Launch your iTunes on your computer.
  • Go to the “PLAYLISTS” menu located on the left-side panel.
  • Locate the duplicate playlists from the list and then right-click on one.
  • Select the “Delete from library” from the library option. Doing so will delete all the selected playlists at once.

TIP: Be careful not to release the control key before finishing to select the duplicates. If that happens by mistake, do not click on the next song. Instead, go to the next step to delete the already chosen songs. If you release the control button and click on the next song, all the pre-highlighted songs will be lost. And you will have to start again.

  1. How to Prevent Duplicate Files on iTunes 12 or Later
  • Click on iTunes to launch it.
  • When the program opens, click on the “Preferences” tab.
  • Confirm if the “Keep iTunes Media folder organized” option is checked. If not yet verified, click on the box to keep it checked. Also, ensure to keep the box next to “Copy files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library” checked too.
  • After that, click on the button located next to the “Reset all dialogue warnings”.
  • Lastly, click on the “Ok” button to confirm your action, and the iTunes folder will now be kept organized.

TIP: If you choose the “Keep file” option, the system then proceeds will clean the duplicated files on iTunes but not on your hard disk.

  • Download and the most recent version of iTunes from apple.com and install on your Windows PC.
  • Open your iTunes and then press on Alt + Shift if using windows 7 or 8. If you’re using earlier Windows versions, click on the Shift + Click on the “View” menu. Doing so will prompt. After doing that, proceed and click on “Display Exact Items.” By doing that, the list of songs will change to duplicate files if they have the same song name, same Artist, and Albums.
  • Note: Ensure you hold on the control or shift option, you will end up with the standard display that shows duplicate songs based on the same name.
  • Organize your duplicate to make the deletion task effortless. When you have well-sorted files that are sorted according to dates added, you can easily choose the copies that you would like to keep and the ones to delete. As such, you can delete the older ones and retain the currently added duplicates.
  • Having sorted your list, it’s now easy to select a huge chunk of duplicate files and delete them at once by Clicking on the first file, then holding on the “Shift” key. Doing that will select all the data that you’d wish to delete.
  • Lastly, press on the “delete” key on your computer’s keyboard to discard the duplicates.

TIP: Ensure to Download and install the latest version of the iTunes before beginning the procedure. If you opt for the old version of iTunes, you may end up deleting some files that are no duplicates but displayed in the copies. Also, it will show “Files” instead of “View” in step 2.

  1. Delete Duplicates on iTunes on Windows Using Third-Party Program (DeDuper)
  • Back up all your songs and data before starting the process.
  • First, open your iTunes and generate the list of duplicate files on your iTunes window. To do that, click on the “View” and select the “Show Duplicate Items”.
  • Next, highlight the list of all duplicates by clicking on the first file on the list, and then hold on the “Shift” key and click on the last file.
  • Double-click on your downloaded VBS file to run the script. By doing that, all your selected data will get discarded except one. In addition to that, the played and the skipped counts will get merged, and your best record kept. To retrieve your discarded files, head to the recycle bin.

The program will keep the big files to maintain the best quality of the version.
