Spiritual goals might be abstract sometimes. We always long to be close to God but the question is what does it actually look like? You might wonder how to get there and get to know if you have actually arrived. There are so many questions running through your mind. Thankfully, here are some ways to find yourself close to god.
- Give Thanks
Keep in mind gratitude will open your eyes to everything that God is doing around you. With gratitude, you will have a heart which is satisfied and puts its trust on God instead of complaining regarding the circumstance or getting angry with him.
- Pray Every Day
Each morning wake up and pray about the forthcoming day. Ask God to give your strength and potential. Or, you can simply tell him what is going on with your life. Again, every night before you fall asleep, make sure that you pray to God and pray to him for getting you through the day. Say a prayer of gratitude.
- Know God is your Friend and Not your Judge
You might have come across the saying that you should seek God in everything that you are doing. Honestly, there is no particular way of applying this faith. However, there is one thing that you can do; you can speak to God like a friend. Talk to God whenever anything good or bad happens in your life. In case something amazing happens to you then just take one minute and thank God. Again, if something bad happens, pray and ask for his guidance.
- Study the Word
You cannot become a Christian if you do not know Jesus. Jesus has been revealed in the Scriptures, in Old, as well as New Testament. However, know that the Bible is not just a book where you get to learn about God. Bible is active and alive. If you read it, you will find it that God is trying to guide us, convict us, or point us towards the truth through this. Reading the Bible will give an answer to your questions and will transform how you think about life and things.
- Memorize the Scripture
This is the second part of knowing the Word. Bible enables us to learn about God and his ways. If you memorize the Scriptures, it will keep His words in your heart. Jesus knew the Scripture and was known to quote it often. Every time Satan tempted him, he responded with the Scripture.
- Listen to Christmas Music
Find out the type of Christmas music that you would like to listen. This will keep you close to God. In case you do not like Christmas music, you can listen to songs about God you love and incorporate them into your playlist. Make sure that you listen to them every day.
- Get into a Small Group or Local Church
You should know that you are going to benefit a lot if you have a group of people who are going to support you and be with you on your journey with God. Thus, being a part of a local church or a small group will prove to be really useful. The group will keep you accountable and will offer you wisdom when you need. As a matter of fact, they are going to be with you when you are distressed. In the words of Jesus, the church was intended to be done within the community. Being a part of the community which cares about you and also your relationship with God is a good thing to do.
- Read a Faith-Filled Book
There are many faith-filled books that you can read such as Captivating by Stasi Eldredge and John. When you read these kinds of books, it gives you a greater insight into God, your faith in him, and also yourself.
- Transform your Thoughts
We are being barraged each and every day with numerous words, ideas, and images. Most of these tend to ignore God, mock him, or conflict with His truth. If you want to grow more close to Christ, you need to make a decision about what you are going to allow in your mind. Keep in mind that God’s word has to be louder than everything else that you are hearing every day.
- Confess and Repent
Last but not least, confess and repent. This will enable you to grow Christ-like since it will help you to root the sin out. This way you will be able to form a deep relationship with God. With confession, you will be able to acknowledge the specific weaknesses and sins. It will bring to light the mistakes that you have committed. Repentance is a way to turn those sins and make the Holy Spirit empower you to do so.
