Changing the time on iHome seems like a pretty straightforward job. Well, if you have a manual lying around and you follow the guidelines, then it is simple. But sometimes even a manual won’t be able to help you because some iHome devices are not quite like the standard ones.

Some devices are constructed a bit differently. In most cases, these are iHome devices that are found in hotels, motels, and even hostels. These are so-called hotel versions of the iHome. The difference is that their set clock button is covered with a plastic cover.

They cover the clock button so that their guests can’t play with date/time. What they don’t realize is that many of their guests need to change date/time on the iHome device because of many practical reasons, not just to mess with the iHome device.

That alone complicates things. But that doesn’t mean we can’t go around this obstacle and set up the clock on the iHome device.

1. Automatically Sync the Time

The single most straightforward way is to look for the USB port. If the USB port is available, you can use it to plug your device (tablet or phone).

The time sync feature is possible from iPhones, iPads, and recent iPods such as iPod touch, iPod nano, and iPod classic. There are no time/date sync options available for older iPod models like the iPod mini. It is a software thing, and there is no way around it if you own one of the older models.

To complete the sync, you need first to find the adjust/sync time button and then press it. If the sync is successful, you can see a message displayed saying “Time Updated.” If not, “Sync Failed” will appear on display. If that happens, repeat the procedure once or twice. Most of the time that should do the trick, and the time will be set right. However, if that doesn’t work, you need to set the time manually. The following section will guide you through that procedure.

2. Manually Set the Time

Even if there is a cover, that doesn’t mean the cover cannot be removed. All plastic covers found on hotel versions include a small handle that, when pressed, releases the back cover. That means you will be able to see and have access to all the buttons. Unless you have the manual in front of you, here’s what you need to do.

  • Hold the adjust/time button until you see the time flashing on display.
  • Use the +/- buttons to correct the time. Mind the AM/PM indicator that is located on the left side of the display.
  • Go back to the adjust/time sync button and press it again.
  • That will make the year start flashing. Again, use the +/- to get the year right. If you want, you can even change the clock display format. You can go with a 12-hours format or 24 hours format, whatever you prefer.

If you also want to set the month and date, you will need to press again the adjust button. The +/- buttons will help you get the month/date right.

When you are done with all that, you can exit the time/calendar mode by simply clicking the adjust/time button again. Alternatively, don’t touch any button for ten or so seconds, and you will automatically exit the time/calendar mode.
