One of the famous car adjustments done nowadays by most car owners is lowering it.

Step 1: Raise The Front Part of Your Car

Step 2: Take Off All the Lug Nuts

Step 3: Remove The Front Strut Assembly

Sometimes the right strut designs differ from car to car, most car struts are held securely by three bolts on top and two bolts at the bottom. You can access the three upper bolts through opening the hood then remove them through loosening them from the upper side.

Immediately you are done with removing all the bolts, pull the whole strut assembly free.

Step 4: Compress the Strut Spring

Once you finish removing the strut assembly, take the strut spring compressor then compress the spring to eliminate all tension between the upper strut mount and the spring.

It’s vital to compress the spring continuously in small increments as you interchange it between both sides. Make sure all tension is relieved to safely remove the upper strut mount.

Step 5: Take Off the Compressed Coil Spring

Once you’ve adequately compressed the coil spring, make sure you turn on the compressed air. Pick your impact gun with the right size of the socket then remove the upper nut that holds the strut mount on the assembly.

After removing the upper nut, pull the upper strut mount then remove the compressed coil spring from the assembly.

Step 6: Fix New Coil Spring on the Strut Assembly

Most lowering springs are designed to sit on the strut perch in a specific design. Therefore, ensure you seat the spring appropriately while installing it on your strut assembly. Please make sure you replace the rubber spring seats when they are part of the kit.

Step 7: Install Again the Top Strut Mount

You have to compress the spring once more depending on how low the new springs are before you reinstall the nut. Just compress the spring until you can freely install the nut properly. After that, twist it for a few threads then make it tight using the air impact gun.

Step 8: Place the Strut Assembly on Your Car

Immediately you finish reassembling the strut assembly using the new lowering spring, place the strut assembly back to your car.

It’s very easy to place one of the lower bolts inside first to give support to the strut then fix the remaining bolts once you finish securing the strut to the car.

Step 9: Lower the Other Side of the Car

After you have reinstalled the strut on the car, fix back the wheel then torque the lug bolts down. Then go ahead with lowering the other side through doing the same process on the other side of the car’s strut assembly.

Step 10: Then Change the Back Coil Springs

After replacing the front springs, move on and replace the back coil springs following the same method.

Use a Universal Lowering Kit to Lower the Leaf Spring Suspension

Materials Needed

Start by rising your car then place a jack stand beneath the frame, close to the part of your vehicle where you will start with. In addition to that, position the tire chocks or the wooden blocks beneath any of the parts of your car where you’ll be working on, to prevent your car from falling.

  1. Take Off The Bolts That Hold The Suspension Spring.

Immediately after the car is raised, look for the two U-bolts found on the suspension leaf springs. These bolts are long with a U shape with threads at the end parts. Take away the U-bolts using the appropriate tools (mostly an appropriate socket and a ratchet).

  1. Raise The Axle

After removing both U-bolts, pick the car jack then position it beneath the axle close to the area that you are working on then move ahead to raise the axle.

Continue raising the axle until you create enough room that you’ll use to lower the block to fit between the leaf springs and the axle. For instance, when it’s a 2-inch lowering block, then you must raise the axle until you create a 2-inch gap between the spring and the axle to create an adequate room for the block.

  1. Now Fix The New U-Bolts

After fixing the lowering block, pick the new long U-bolts on your lowering kit then fix them over the axle. They will be a bit longer to balance the additional space that was consumed by lowering the block.

Check again to be sure that everything is correctly lined up. After that, fix back the nuts on the U-joints then torque them properly.

  1. Perform The Same Steps on The Other Side

Finally, you’ve lowered one of the vehicle’s side. Return the tire, then lower the car, then take off the jack stand. Do the same thing on the opposite side then lower the rear suspensions too.

  • Jack the car up then perform a visual inspection. Carefully look at whether the jack is placed at the center of the rear axle. In case it’s not, then position it to the right position to get rid of eventual damage to the vehicle. Ensure it’s located along the hydraulic locking area. After that jack the car up to approximately 2 inches. After you’ve attained the desired height, look for objects such as jack stands that can damage the car when it’s jacked down.
