- a proper pool test kit- make sure you use a digital kit as it provides the most accurate readings that you can work with.
- Muriatic acid-this helps in lowering both the pH and the alkalinity. You can as well raise the pool’s ph. using sodium bisulfate. However, muriatic acid is most preferred.
- Protectives-when raising your pool’s ph. level, be sure to use things like long sleeves cloth, goggles, gloves, and other protective clothing.
- Aeration- this isn’t a tool or a chemical but a nice method to boost the pH level while stabilizing the alkalinity.
However, before you start raising your pool’s ph. level without raising its alkalinity, you must have some idea on the target alkalinity and pH levels of the pool. The ph. level of the pool should vary from 7.4 to 7.6, and its TA level should range between 80 to 120 ppm to make it balanced.
- Record and Set The Desired Value Of The Alkalinity Level
Begin by taking the alkalinity and the ph. level readings in your pool using a digital test kit. Perhaps you want to get an alkalinity level of 100 ppm. Remember that both alkalinity and pH levels of the pool reduce once you add the acid.
Therefore, an 80-90 ppm target is excellent, but that will drop the ph. Below 7.0, once the acid is added.
- Dilute the muriatic acid then add it to the pool
If you have a 20K gallons pool capacity, to get alkalinity of 100ppm, make sure you add approximately two-quart of the muriatic, be sure to spread the acid uniformly on water. And as you do this, the pump must be running.

- Test Your Pool
Begin by testing the pool’s alkalinity. Generally, the pH of a pool ranges from74 to 7.8, and its alkalinity varies between 110 to 150 ppm (parts per million). Therefore, if your pool has a lower alkalinity level, then you must raise its alkalinity
Next, buy baking soda in large quantities. You will add up to 10 lbs. of baking soda to the pool. But this depends on how low the alkalinity level is in your pool.
- Decide On The Amount Of Baking Soda To Add
After that, determine the quantity of baking soda to add to the pool. Many pool chemical measurements are packed based on 10,000 water gallons. Therefore, if your pool is smaller or larger, be sure to adjust your math. Usually, a 1.5 lbs. of the chemical on a 10,000 water gallons pool will boost its alkalinity by approximately ten ppm.
When your pool ph. level tests below 7.2, make sure you add up to 4 pounds of baking soda.
