How to Remove Grease Stains

Our Favorite Method for Getting Grease Stains Out of Clothes: Dish Soap. Just squirt a bit of dish soap right onto the stain and let it sit for a little while before washing. Once the wash cycle is done, check for the stain. If you don’t see it (you likely won’t!), you’re clear to send the item through the dryer.

Vinegar. Just soak a sponge or rag in vinegar, and use it to wipe down the greasy surface. It’ll cut through the grease and grime in one easy step. If you don’t like the smell of undiluted vinegar, you can dilute it with water.

WD-40 is a petroleum-based lubricant that can cause stains on clothes. But it also can help to remove stains. Simply spray the stain with a bit of WD-40 from the front and back of the fabric. Allow it to work for about five minutes.

Squirt a few drops of dish soap on the grease mark. Manufacturers formulate dish soap to break down grease. Grasp the fabric on both sides of the stain and rub the material together to work the soap into lather in the greasy area. Do not put it in the dryer because the heat can further set a stubborn stain.

Cover the spot with dish soap and let it sit for a good 5 – 20 minutes depending on the severity. Blot with warm water and this process should easily lift the grease right out. If additional reinforcement is needed, try utilizing baking soda to absorb whatever’s left before gently scrubbing it off.

The problem with oil stains is that instead of leaving a brightly stained area, they tend to leave a slightly darkened area that may be difficult to notice right away. This area darkens with age unless it is removed quickly. And if the piece of clothing and oil stain dry, the stain can be set permanently.

To remove grease or cooking oil stains, you can pre-treat the stain with a spot of dish soap, like Dawn. Wash the garment in an enzyme-based liquid detergent, such as Tide Ultra Stain Release Liquid which has been specially designed to lift off even the toughest stains, like oils, from clothing.

The vinegar will break down the grease and the baking soda will act as a mild abrasive to lift the stain. After you get the stain out, launder your clothes as usual and air-dry (just in case!).

One of the oldest tricks used to remove oil stains involves using Coca-Cola on the stain. This method typically works best on smaller sized stains. You can use any type of cola product and pour it directly over the oil stain and then let it soak in overnight (or for at least 8 hours).

For fabric stains, try making a paste of 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water, smear over the grease stain and leave to dry. Brush off with your fingers, then add laundry stain remover/prewash according to instructions on packaging. Machine wash, hot if possible.
