How to Recover Deleted Google Docs

There is nothing quite like that moment of anxiety when the google doc you’ve been diligently working on mistakenly gets deleted. Instead of clicking wildly or smashing buttons on your keyboard, try these steps to recover your lost work.
You will need to access your Google Drive on a computer
- Even though Google Drive and Google Docs are available on mobile devices, you will need to use the computer version of the app to restore deleted documents
- Go to https://drive.google.com/drive/trash and select the document that you would like to recover, and click “restore”.
- The document should restore itself and return to your Google Drive within seconds. Note that larger files may take longer to restore.
The Google Doc may not have been deleted, it may have just moved
- It is possible that the document moved within the file, or moved to a different file.
- To check this, you will need to go to the activity panel. Access the activity panel via the computer version of the app by going to https://drive.google.com/
- Look for the information icon. It will appear as a gray circle with an “i” in it. You can find it at the top right hand side of the screen.
- The information icon will bring up a list of all of the Google Docs that you have opened and worked on in chronological order. Scroll down the list until you find the file that you are looking for.
The deleted Google Doc was in a file that was created by someone else
- Even if the folder or document was shared with you by the creator, if they have deleted it you will no longer see it in your Google Drive.
- To find a list of all deleted files that you have had access to, go to https://drive.google.com/drive/search?q=is:unorganized and you should be able to find any deleted Docs that you have had previous access to.
Things to consider if these options do not work:
- You will only be able to recover a deleted Google Doc if you are using a consumer account and not a business account (i.e. an account set up through your company, school or other organization and not a personal account)
- You can only find your deleted document if you were the creator. If not, you will have to contact the person who created the Google Doc and ask them to recover it.
- If you have deleted your Google account, your Google Drive and Google Docs may have been deleted permanently.
Possible solution if none of these options worked:
- On a computer, open your web browser and type in https://support.google.com/drive
- This will bring you to the Google Help Center. At the top of the screen in the right hand corner there will be a “contact us” tab. Click that tab and select “missing or deleted files”.
You will have the option to choose your contact method. You can either request a representative to call you, chat with a representative, or send an email. The call and chat options both show current approximate wait times so you will know when to expect your answers.
