Nothing in your home will last forever, including the tile, and since the bathroom is the busiest room in your home, retiling the shower is a task one should consider. The shower comprises of entirely knocking out the present tile and thereafter installing a new tile. A shower attracts lots of dirt, sweat or any undesirable growths, it deserves to be cleaned as much as possible.

  1. Gather the Required Tools

It may be difficult for you to remove the existing tile without any preparation. So it is never a good idea to just try to remove the existing tile without having the required tools.

  • A new tile to replace the old one, putty knife or utility knife to remove it.
  • Hammer and sander for removing the tile if it doesn’t come out only by a knife.
  • Scrub brush to make a place for placing new tile. Grout and grout towel.
  • The mixture of mortar and mortar trowel to fix the new tile.
  • Paint remover, tile spacers, gloves, caulk and goggles as precautionary tools.
  1. Remove Old Tile

For placing a new tile, remove the existing tile is a prerequisite.

  • Firstly remove the head of the shower and its handle. Thereafter, cover the floors of the shower to prevent any damage from the tile which may fall.
  • Pick up your chisel and hammer and begin from the corner (bottom). Kindly place the chisel on one side of the tile and then uses the hammer to pull the tile out.
  • Some tile may just chip, but your motive is to get every individual piece off by its own.
  • When all of the tiles are removed, then chisel off any mortar which is remaining.
  1. Prepare & Clean Walls

Before you are moving forward, you have to make the walls flat and smooth. If you have skipped any spots of mortar, then just chisel all those spots off immediately.

  • The wall is required to be smooth before you move to add any tile.
  • A wall which is uneven will only make way for uneven retile.
  • Next, just measure the width of any one wall.
  • Find its middle and then make a line (vertical) from apex to bottom. This center is where you have to begin.
  1. Retile Your Shower

Before you start, take the measurement of the wall and then decide the no. of tiles required. Go to the store and buy the same number of tile and in fact some extra. By adopting this way, you will not overspend and your money will be saved.

  • To begin with, cover the entire bottom half part of your wall with mortar (thinnest) and then spread it with your notched trowel of mortar.
  • Press it down hard with the mortar trowel. Be sure that the trowel is neat and clean and is even throughout your wall.
  • Set the row (bottom) of tile in the place from where you are starting at the vertical line’s center that you already drew. Now, press the tiles properly into the mortar with the help of spacers between it.
  • Work your own way to its sides, by cutting all the tiles (end) if you require. If you are not comfortable in cutting the tile by your own then hire a professional.
  • Repeat the above-mentioned steps for each of the rows. And remember to use spacers every time in order to leave some room for grout. Now, just let the tile and mortar set overnight.
  1. Add Grout

Remove all of the spacers from a mortar. Then, spread the obtained grout over your walls from the top of it to its bottom, gently pressing it into the remaining spaces with the trowel (grout). Use a sponge (damp) to clean off all the excess group as soon as you can. But try to remain persistent with cleaning.

  • The grout could easily get harden and then stick to your all new tile.
  • Grout all of the lines barring the vertical lines which are there along with your walls and the existing horizontal lines along its floor.
  • Allow the grout to set for almost 1 day. Now, caulk the lines (vertical) along with your wall and also horizontal lines along your floor.
  • Let the caulk and grout set for almost 48 hours before you use the shower.
  1. Use of Colored Grout

It may sound nonsensical but using colors have an illusion on our mind. Yes, it’s all inside the brain, but it works. If you use more than a bucket, usually there can be slight color variations that can break this rhythm we talked about earlier.

  • If your bathroom is a small place, the use of colors like gray grout will make it look even smaller and clumsy.
  • On the other hand, the use of bright colors will make it look more open and spacious.
  • Look for color variations for the grout.
  1. Cleaning Grout in the Shower

This bright stuff is porous and hard to get, can leave stains and shows out every little blemish you can have. But, you can clean it properly before moving with retiling.

  • Apply vinegar and water mixture generously all over the place. Do let it sit for five to seven minutes.
  • Adding baking soda to the mixture also helps remove the grout more easily with DIY house tools. You must use it before the vinegar solution on the grout.
  • For even tough grout stains, you can even try hydrogen peroxide. For mold or mildewed grout, this is a game booster.

TIPS

  • Be very much careful with the tile along the ceiling and wall.
  • If you will not take enough care and precaution then the wall may get ruined.
  • Retiling is not in any way a small process. It requires elbow grease and also a lot of determination in order to get the job done.

Don’t just move on to another process without allowing the mortar to settle overnight.
