How to Separate Oil and Water in the Ocean

Oil spills are a very harmful occurrence and greatly affects the marine environment. The disasters also threatens the life-forms in the marine. Oil exploration from aquatic resources is an essential activity in many oceanic places, and oil spills end up happening accidentally. However, here are ways on how to separate oil and water.

  1. Using Oil Booms

This is a popular and simple method of separating oil spills from water. Equipment known as containment booms works as a cover to protect the oil from floating or moving further. Oil booms float on top of the water, and they have three sections:

A ‘skirt’ based on the surface of the boom to keep the oil from moving beneath the booms.

A ‘freeboard’ is a section that navigates on top of the surface of the water, holding the oil, thus preventing it from spraying the oil on the upper side.

A chain or a cable that links the parts to stabilize and strengthen the boom.

When it is not possible to remove a mixture of oil and water using booms effectively, you can also accelerate the oil disintegration. Dispersants are chemical agents sprayed on the oil spill on water using boats and aircraft, which helps in breaking down of all oily things in the sea.

Dispersants permit the spilled oil in eater to link with water chemically. This method is ideal for oil spills over large water surfaces.

  1. Natural Oil Recovery

This is the easiest way of dealing with oil spill up. It involves using nature vagaries such as wind, the weather, the sun, naturally occurring microbes, and tides. This method is favorable in specific cases when the shoreline is inaccessible or remote, or when the environmental factors of separating an oil spill outweigh the benefits.

However, due to the consistent nature of these elements, the oil will automatically break down into smaller components or evaporates.

  1. Manual Labor

This method requires the use of manual labor and handheld tools to separate the oily contaminants in water. The technique involves using manual means such as shovels, rakes, hands, and others to clean to the oily surface then placing the oil on special containers.

But sometimes you can use mechanized machinery to provide additional assistance, and they help in reaching the inaccessible areas.

  1. High-Pressure And Hot Water Washing

This method is majorly applicable where mechanical oil separation from water, such as using skimmers and booms, is inaccessible. This method is essential in dislodging the weathered and trapped oil from areas that are inaccessible to machines.

Water heaters can heat water up to 170°C, which can then be sprayed using hands with nozzles or high-pressure wands. Afterward, the oil is pushed to the surface of the water, which is finally collected by sorbents or skimmers.

  1. Using Sorbents

Refers to materials used in soaking up liquids through absorption. They pull in fluids via the pores or through absorption (developing an extra layer on top). All these properties are essential if you want to separate oil from water effectively.

Materials frequently used as sorbents of oil include peat moss, vermiculite or straw, and hay.

How to Separate Coconut Oil from Water

You can easily separate water from the cold-pressed coconut oil using the following methods:

Using A Freezer

  • Start by transferring the mixture to a deep freezer for three hours.
  • The coconut oil coagulates quickly on cold environments and won’t mix with water.
  • After that, as this happens, use a spoon to scoop the hard section of your mixture (that is the hardened coconut oil) then discard the other part that’s water.
  • From there, collect your cold-pressed and pure coconut oil!

Without a Freezer

You can use this method when you don’t have a fridge.

  • Using a spoon, carefully separate the mixture through scooping away the oil from the bowl, then place it on a different container.
  • With that, cover the container holding the scooped oil tightly using a plastic wrap. Make some few holes on the wrap covering the oil then allow it to sit in a corner undisturbed.
  • Doing this makes the remnant water to evaporate away from the coconut oil slowly, and within a short time, you will remain with cold-pressed and pure coconut oil.
