Streaming subscriptions like Netflix have become exceedingly popular. More and more homes are turning away from traditional cable services in favor of streaming services. But not every show on Netflix is family friendly. Here’s how to control what your family has access to.

Open your Netflix account in a web browser.

  1. There are two options for setting parental controls: Account Level Settings in which a PIN is needed for access, and Profile Level Settings in which controls are set for specific user profiles.

Choose which option you want to use.

  1. With Account Level Settings, you can set a 4 digit PIN to restrict access to shows and movies by maturity rating, or for specific shows and movies.

  1. With Profile Level Settings, you can select the appropriate maturity rating for each member of the family. They will only be able to access shows and movies within those restrictions.

Set your parental controls

  1. Account Level Settings: Maturity Rating
  • Go to the “Settings” tab on your account homepage and select “Parental Settings”.
  • Type in your Netflix account password and hit continue.
  • You will be prompted to enter 4 numbers. These 4 numbers will be your PIN.
  • Set your maturity level for the entire account. Choose from “Little Kids-All Ages”, “Older Kids- 7+,13+”, “Teens-13+”, and “Adults- 16+, 18+”.
  • Click “Save” and you are done.
  1. Account Level Settings: Show/ Movie Specific
  • Go to the “Settings” tab on your account homepage and select “Parental Settings”.
  •  Type in your Netflix account password and hit continue.
  • You will be prompted to enter 4 numbers. These 4 numbers will be your PIN.
  • Select “PIN protection for a specific title” and enter the title of the shows and/ or movies you want to restrict.
  • Click on the title when it appears to restrict it.
  • Select “Save” and you are set.
  1. Profile Level Settings
  • On your “Account” page, select “Manage Profiles” and select the profile of the user that you would like to restrict.
  • Select “Allowed T.V. Shows and Movies”, and choose the maturity rating that you would like to set for this profile.
  • Choose from “For Little Kids Only”, “For Older Kids and Below”, “For Teens and Below”, and “All Maturity Levels”. The user whose profile you are restricting will only be able to access titles that fall into the category that you choose, but other profiles can be set to different maturity levels.
  • Select “Save” and you are done.
  1. Things to keep in mind when setting Parental Controls on Netflix:

  • Only the primary account holder can change settings and set restrictions.
  • The primary account holder’s restrictions can only be set to “For Teens and Below” or “All Maturity Levels”.
  • The primary account holder can alter settings as needed at any time by following the above instructions.
  • Changes to settings and restrictions may take a few minutes to go into effect. If the changes take more than a few minutes, sign out of your account and then sign back in and the changes that you made to the settings should be in effect

How do I restrict shows on Netflix?
