How to Iron on Letters to T-shirts 

Fancy t-shirts that are well decorated with letters may be a bit expensive. However, this should not deter you from having a shirt with your favorite slogan or word. This is because it is easy to customize your t-shirt from the comfort of your home.  However, you must be keen and follow all the steps we discuss here for you to see results.  The process is not as more straightforward as it seems. A high level of concentration is required for the procedure to be a success.

  1. What you need to know

Before you start, they are a few things that you should know about this process. You must choose the right T-shirt. Iron on letters transfers does not happen to any T-shirt you come across. For better results, go for a t-shirt whose fabric is 100% cotton. In instances where you are confronted with t-shirts that are not 100% cotton, choose the one that has a high percentage of cotton. This will guarantee you the best results.

Do not perform this procedure on nylon jackets, velvet, acrylic, leather, vinyl, trigger (fabrics with a finish). If you are not sure of the fabric used to manufacture your t-shirt, just read the garment hangtag. It is here you get all the information related to the t-shirt in question.

  1. What do you need?

It is good to have all the items you need ready. This makes your work easier. Here are the materials you should have by your side;

  • Iron-on letters or numbers
  • Shirt
  • Iron
  • Ironing surface
  • Ironing cloth
  1. Prepare the Tshirt

Now that you have chosen the right shirt for this exercise, it is now time to make it ready for the job. Wash the shirt and dry it. Do not use any fabric softener or any other chemicals. This is because they add another layer of coating to the fabric, and this may negatively interfere with the transfer glue.

  1. Cut Out the iron-on Letters You Want

Letters form the basis of this exercise. The number of letters you want on your tee will solely depend on the word you want on your t-shirt. It is always good to choose simple words that do not require you to cut out many letters. There are several ways of getting these letters.

One, you can test your creativity by cutting out these letters. You should be careful when carrying out this step. This is because you want to ensure every individual letter is uniform.  That is the bottom, top, and each side of the margin are the same. If you cannot make it cutting the letters without making errors, you can draw the letters on a shiny side of the paper with a non-permanent marker. This will work best in helping you guide your design.

You can print out the letters in black ink as well. Make sure you do it on a piece of standard printer paper. Then layer this paper with the vinyl material against a window and practice the classic letter tracing.

  1. Place the T-shirt on the Iron Surface

Lay the shirt on the ironing surface. We recommend that you choose a heat resistant surface such as wood cutting board- that is hard and smooth. This ensures you do things right. A wood cutting board is better compared to the ironing board. Before you lay the t-shirt on the hard surface, lay a sheet or ironing cloth on the hard surface.

Press the t-shirt using the iron to remove any wrinkles seen. You should set the iron to cotton settings. Before you use it, you should let it warm for 8 minutes. Always ensure your iron is set to cotton settings.  You should do this immediately before you begin to iron letters transfers.  Do not use steam. Since iron boxes are different, the temperature may be adjusted accordingly if needed.

  1. Arrange the Letters on the Shirt

To ensure you get it right, align the shirt in such a way that letters you place on the shirt do not move—fine-tune the letters so that they are appealing and uniform. Trim off excess edges and make rounded corners when possible. Arrange the iron-on letters on the t-shirt in a way you want them to appear. You can line the bottom edges to ensure they appear straight.

Once you are sure they’re fine, remove the paper backing from each letter.  You must be cautious that you don’t touch the sticky side with the iron. This is because it will remove the letter from the t-shirt.  Place a piece of fabric on top of the letters and start ironing. As you iron, the letters do it from the middle part of the letter to the edges.

This minimizes the development of air bubbles. Apply pressure on each letter, and it is advisable you do it in one letter at a time. Do this until you are done. Once you have ironed each letter, iron all of them together, paying attention to the edges and corners.

  1. Finishing Works

Allow the garment to cool for at least 2 to three minutes. After the minutes have elapsed, remove the cotton cover. If the letters depending on the materials you used have an extra paper cover, you can peel it off. After that, you can wash and dry the T-shirt and wear it.
