When it comes to giving you tips, we are always trying our best not to disappoint. This time round we have something for cornhole lovers. It is an excellent game for passing time. Well, we are here to help you scale up your creativity and make your cornhole board pleasing to the eyes. You do need a technician to do the painting for you. By following our guideline you can do it comfortably without a problem.

  1. Get everything ready. Before you began the process of painting the cornhole board, it is important that you carry out some prep work. Do the following;
  • Ensure that the working area is well ventilated. Ideally, we recommend that you paint your cornhole board outside rather than in an indoor room. This is because the possibility of buildup of paint fumes is greatly reduced. However, if you choose to paint your cornhole board in an indoor room, ensure you open the doors and windows.
  • Lay down some drop cloths on the ground or the working space. This ensures you don’t mess up the floor with the paint.
  • Carefully check the cornhole board and look out whether you can see any holes. If you recognize any holes use putty knife or any object that will help you in pushing wood filler into those holes and breaks. When you are filling the holes with wood filler do not worry about over filling it. This is because the excess wood filler will sand down when carrying out the sanding process.
  • Strictly follow the instructions laid down by the wood filler manufacturers especially on the drying duration. In most cases, the wood filler takes eight hours to dry.
  • Sand your cornhole board smooth. You can use a medium-grit sand paper to rub it over the cornhole board to remove any bumps and dried wood filler. Also, you can go ahead and sand any sharp edges and corners. Do this repeatedly until the cornhole board is smooth. If you have an electric sander the better. It is going to save much of your time unlike using sand paper.
  • Using a damp rag wipe the board to wipe any dusts. This ushers you to the next step of applying the primer.
  1. Application of the Primer. This provides a solid base for your paint to stick on. This step should take you fewer minutes since perfection is not a must here. Just make sure the whole board is covered with the primer.  Before you apply the primer on the board, it is important for you to understand that it is hard to clean off the primer. As such, do not use your quality brush that you intend to use while painting to apply the primer. This is because you will end up throwing it on the dustbin. Here is how you apply the primer;
  • Choose your favorite white oil based primer.
  • Open the lid.
  • Using stirrer to briefly mix the primer.
  • Using a roller or brush apply the primer on the board and leave it for one hour for it to dry or as per the manufacturers directives.
  1. Layout the Design. This is where your creativity is put to test. The good thing about this step is that you are not limited to drawing specific patterns. Be creative and come up with something that is going to impress you together with your friends. But again, do not go for hard and complicated designs. It will take you eternity to complete the job. This is how you layout the design on your board.
  • Use your pencil to draw patterns directly on your board. These patterns work best in guiding you when carrying out the painting job.
  • In case you choose to include geometric designs then you can use a ruler or a yardstick.
  • If you want to make straight lines on your board we recommend that you choose the frogs tape. This is arguably one of the best painter’s tape you will ever find.
  1. Choose the Best Paint. This one step that most painters tend to overlook. Well, you don’t want just to apply any paint available. Picking the best paint is quite important. They are millions of paints in the paint store. Know what you want and that paint works best with your design and makes your cornhole more appealing. To help you make the right decision, here is our guide when it comes to choosing the paint.
  • If you want your cornhole board to look shiny then go for high gloss paint.
  • For slightly shiny board choose semi-gloss paint.
  • Depending on your budget, you might choose to apply one paint or different color. The decision squarely on you.
  1. Application of the paint. Now it is time to make your board more appealing and pleasing. Here is how you should do it.
  • Open the paint and use paint stirrer mix the paint. This helps to combine the pigments and binders in the paint.
  • There are a number of ways in which you can apply the paint. You can use a brush. Dip it into the paint and remove any excess paint by wiping the brush on the rim of the can then apply on the board.
  • Also, you can use a roller. Dip the roller in the paint and roll it a few times to load it with enough paint. Then apply the paint over the board evenly.
  • As you apply the paint remember to follow the pattern you have drawn.
  • Upon completion, leave the board to dry.

Choose a paint for the cornhole boards.

For a slight shine, choose a semigloss paint. For very shiny boards, pick a high gloss paint. Determine if you want to paint the boards a single color or if you want to paint each of them different colors. For example, you might paint 1 of the boards red and the other board blue.

Paint doesn’t raise the grain of the wood, so I typically do not sand between coats of polycrylic over paint. However, if it feels rough to the touch after a coat of polycrylic, you can sand with 400 grit sandpaper to make it smooth. Make sure you clean the surface after sanding.

How do you apply Polycrylic without bubbles?

One way to apply the polycrylic quickly and without bubbles is to use the spray-on type. Make sure you keep the spray can moving or you will apply too much polycrylic in one place and create bubbles. Engage the spray nozzle along the side of the wood and not over top the face of the wood.
