If you wish to motivate someone, whether he or she is at your workplace, is your team member or subordinate, a student in your class or a family member who is finding it hard to get on with their life, there are certain aspects to consider first.
- Why Do You Need to Motivate
In general, a person is willing to listen to another or would allow them to motivate if any of the following aspects are satisfied:
- When one reports to another and is bound by an employer-employee relationship.
- Trusts and respects the other person as a team member or peer or as a parent or well-wisher.
- The person is looking for positive encouragement and someone who can lend an ear.
In the case of the person who wishes to motivate another, he or she needs to be clear of the intentions and outcome:
- As a boss, being able to motivate a subordinate would have a direct impact on work is done or the accomplishments of the department or team.
- As a peer, one is often impacted by lack of motivation of another with whom one has to coordinate to get work done; or one could simply be concerned when they find a colleague disinterested in their work or becoming an obstacle in getting work done in a team or in a department.
Once the intentions are clear, it is then that you need to decide on how they wish to go about motivating the other and the extent of responsibilities they wish to take on in order to see the positive outcome of the same.
- Show Personal Interest
Those who are lacking in motivation in life or at work; there could be several reasons behind the same. If you wish to inspire as a boss, help as a peer or as a family member, you need to start by showing interest. This can be done in the following ways:
- A basic human need is to be seen and noticed; everyone wishes to be valued for the person they are.
- As a leader you should show that they appreciate their team members for the different contributions they make and the skills and expertise each one brings to the team; such aspects would help to breed loyalty.
- Peers can help each other by listening to what problems other people face; encouragement to open up and share problems as well as helping another to feel good about themselves is a good way for peers and friends to encourage.
- As a parent, it is imperative that you pay attention to where their child is struggling or facing the problem; conflicts and rudeness of behavior are usually traits that are indicative of something that troubles kids, especially in adolescent years.
- For their members in the family or friends who are adults, showing interest in understanding their specific situation in life is a way to help them feel valued and supported.
- Lend Your Ears
Showing interest and listening to another usually goes hand in hand. This has a positive motivational impact such as:
- If you are a boss, listening to your team members or subordinates is the first step to show that you care; it also helps to understand the nature of a person and what drives or motivates them.
- As a peer or friend, this is the main motivational tool. Whether you can help in any particular problem or situation is secondary; it is more important to lend your ears and give another person which acts as a positive motivational tool.
- As a parent or family member, it is important to take the time to listen and help the other person open up about existing conflicting emotions or feelings that might exist. Often, family members who are living with each other might not discuss matters which could trouble and de-motivate one; if a child is unable to focus on studies due to conflicts they are facing in school or someone is facing social conflicts, these could be issues that become lighter once they are talked about.
- Understand the Strengths of the Other
Those who are trying to get the best out of another need to get them to do or act in ways they are best as per their nature, expertise and value system. If you are a boss, this is an important exercise to do in order to motivate team members:
- It is important to understand strengths at the time of fitting people in different job roles – if a person’s natural interests, expertise, and experience are not attuned to a job role, he or she will not be able to perform well and could be de-motivated.
- Interests and applicability of employees also vary from time to time; hence, a role or assignment given can see a varying performance from an employee due to certain situational factors as well.
- The strength and interests of your child would help determine the kind of vocation or hobby that would inspire them and can lead to future career paths for them.
- If a family member is stymied about work or what to do in life, helping them understand their strengths and interests and channelizing the same would help in motivating them to have faith and pursue the right goals.
- Help Others to Feel Inclusive of a Larger Future
One of the main reasons for being de-motivated is that people often lose sight of larger goals and achievements. How they can contribute and what effects their actions have in helping others or organizations is what they often lose sight of. In such cases, bosses, peers or family members can help to motivate:
- Bosses need to align team members with the larger goals and objectives of an organization; by speaking about the long term goals set or what a department strives to achieve in a quarter or year, team members are inspired to put in their best efforts to help in the achievement of these goals.
- Family members, especially parents or guardians, need to inspire younger kids in the family about the importance of goals such as a career that helps them sustain themselves, do a work that inspires them, dream towards a life that helps them do or explore what they wish to.
By helping people to align with goals or objectives larger than their immediate selves or needs it helps to motivate people to put in their best efforts and to try to do their best in their work or in their studies.
The above steps can help a boss align and motivate team members, peers to provide support to colleagues as well as parents to guide their children in doing the best they can in any endeavor they embark upon.
