A watch link bridges between the blocks that make the band tie it up on your wrist. The watchband makers connect the blocks with one another with a thin pin-like structure which we call as links. But if you need to adjust the length of the band, then you need to remove the blocks from the band and adjust the size of the band. So here are some steps to remove the links without using a pin.

  • Get a piece of metal with a pointed end so that you can push the pins back from the connecting hinges of the blocks.
  • Now start unlinking the blocks from the lock. Push the linking pins back towards outside the hinge. You need to put a bit of pressure on the pins and they will come out from the hinge.
  • Now calculate the number of blocks from and bring out the pins one by one and detach the blocks. Now take a pin again. Set the block hinges one on another and put the pin inside it.

The links on the bands are not only present in the watches, but they are also present in the bracelet too. Like the bracelets, there are several types of bands attached to the wristwatches. Some of these watches have folded bands and they have folded links in them to keep them connected with one another. Like the wristwatches, you may need to adjust the bracelet also and for that, you need to remove the folded watch links. Follow the underwritten steps to accomplish the job.

  • First of all, you need to make the folded watch band straight. For this, you need to bring out the link in the hinge that connects the two ends of the band.
  • Now look for the arrows that are you will get behind the then upper surface of the band. These arrows indicate the side where the pins will get out.
  • You will see a knob right at the opposite of the arrow that locks the folded links so that they don’t detach here and there.
  • Now you need to take a hard but pointed head metal weapon to push the link outside the band. You will see the link with the knob coming out due to heavy pressure on that.
  • Take a forcep now and hold the L shaped link between the blocks.

Most of the watch repairing mechanics uses a watch link removal tool kit to do the job professionally. Some people are in fact earning their livelihood by doing this. Now when they work professionally, they don’t use the random pointed metal piece to remove the links from the watch bands.

  • There is a tool kit specially assembled for the professional removal of these watches links. In a watch link removal tool kit, you will get some big pins with pointed heads to push the links out of the watchband.
  • There are some small pins and forceps tools to assist the mechanic in that job. You will also get a small pin removing screwdriver and width measurement tool along with a hobby hammer.
  • The screwdriver is useful in repairing the watch. If there is any problem in the watch like it is not showing the time perfectly or it is stopped, then you can open the back lid of the watch and make a repair operation into the watch.
  • The hammer is useful in repairing the watch too. All together in the tool kit box, you can find all kinds of tools to repair a wristwatch.

In common wristwatches, there are two common types of metal pins that we use as links of the metal band. The straight pin is of the simple design and it gets through the whole in between the hinges that connect two metal blocks. On the other hand, there is the ‘U’ pin or the ‘L’ pin which holds the metal blocks and works as friction bumps.

The arrows that you find on the opposite surface of the wristwatch band indicate the direction towards which you have to put the pressure to get the link pins out. You can also use the hobby hammer if you feel that the pressure by your hands is not enough.

If you are at your home and you need to adjust the watchband of your watch, you may feel the lack of the tool kit. But don’t worry if you have some board pins at your home.

  • They work in a similar manner like the tool kit link removing pins. You only need to use the board pins to put pressure on the links.
  • If you are worried about damaging the link, then don’t worry. Just follow the arrow mark right on the inner side of the wristwatch band. Put a bit extra pressure on the pins and they will come out easily.
  • If you find it difficult or if there is any evidence of rust in it, then use a bit of lubricating oil. That will make your job easier.

When you have detached the metal blocks of the wristwatch band then you need to put the links back into the hinges. For that, you need to bring two metal blocks together and assemble the hinges one after another. Now put the link pin through the whole of the hinges and push it a bit hard. If it is not getting at the right place, you can again use the hobby hammer for that. You can use some lubricating oils too to make the job easy.

Taking out the right number of links is very important to make a watch adjustable on your wrist. So you need to go to a professional watchmaker for this and it will cost something around.

Mostly we put on a wristwatch on the left wrist and we use our right hand to do the functions related to the adjustments. On the contrary, there is an arrow mark which indicates which way to put the pressure on the band to bring the links out.
